What Is an Influencer Proposal or Outreach?

An influencer proposal or outreach is a document or message sent to gauge an influencer's interest in collaborating on a project or campaign. Depending on your brand, these can be formal (usually an email) or informal (a DM) and play a crucial role in influencer marketing. Without proper outreach, you may find yourself having a hard time securing partnerships with creators. Since many influencers are getting flooded with these types of asks on a daily basis, it's important to craft a proposal that stands out and clearly shows the influencer what is being asked of them. 

Things To Do Before Outreaching an Influencer 

While you may think it’s as simple as sending an email or a DM, there are a few housekeeping items a brand must take care of before reaching out to a new creator for a partnership.

  1. Solidify Your Project or Campaign: It is crucial that you have all of the details of the project or campaign you want to work with the influencer on in its final stages. That way you can give the creator a crystal clear picture of exactly what role you want them to play and answer any questions they may have. That being said, prepare to have a little wiggle room to accommodate requests from the influencer in case those come along. 
  2. Clean Up Your Profile(s): Before sending your proposal, make sure your brand accounts are in tip-top shape, as there is almost a guarantee that the creators you’re reaching out to will immediately visit your profile to see if they’re interested in your product or want to move farther with the partnership. Even if you know these creators are familiar with your brand, it never hurts to do a once or twice-over. 
  3. Research Your Influencer: This may seem obvious, but many brands will send broad-reaching proposals to influencers that are more focused on data and metrics (like follower count or ROI) than what this creator actually posts about and stands for. Take some time to get to know some things about the creator, their brand and their personality. This knowledge will set your future partnership up for success and make it easier to relate to them once you’re speaking with them.
  4. Establish A Connection: This can start weeks or even months before you plan on outreach, but put in an effort to build a connection with your creators before you ask them for a partnership. This is as easy as giving them a follow and liking and commenting on their posts. Once your proposal comes across their metaphorical desk, they’ll be happy to see a familiar face that they know has been hyping up their content from the sidelines and will be much more open to your ideas.
